Once it does, it will immediately try to ping the cloud, download your messages, and then notify you of them – which can sometimes come in much later than when you actually received the new message. Since using cellular data requires more power than wifi, your phone will have trouble accessing your new messages until it can find a stable connection again. If you’re in an area connected to wifi but your phone is shutting off that connection when it’s idle, it will have to resort to cellular data to collect your new messages. This problem can occur if your phone is set to turn off wifi when it is sleeping. If you don’t have a strong connection, your notifications will be delayed as a result. Your Android phone relies on a data connection to pick up new messages and then notify you about them.
